The list of manufacturers that offer launch control is getting a bit longer. Ford is joining Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Porsche and a few boutique makers with its 2013 Shelby Mustang GT500. It\'s not so easy to get 662 hp down to the ground successfully, so Ford does it for you with overclocked computers and precise brake, throttle and clutch control. All you have to do is hold on tight. To enable the launch-control system, drivers can either use the Track Apps function on the gauge cluster or tap a switch on the left side of the instrument panel. When the launch-control function is enabled, all the driver has to do is press firmly on the gas pedal, then quickly release the clutch. “Launch control is essentially a special mode of the traction-control system that integrates the brake and engine-management systems to keep the tires balanced on the peak of the mu-slip curve in order to achieve maximum thrust,” explains John Pfeiffer, senior engineer, SVT Vehicle Engineering. After launch control has been enabled it stays on until it\'s disabled, even when the ignition is turned off. This adds convenience for drag racers who turn their cars off between each run. The Shelby GT500 system lets the driver set the engine speed at launch between 3,000 rpm and 4,500 rpm. That benefits drivers with differing styles and also helps launches on a variety of surfaces. Ford says that drivers new to the system, or who are on cold tires or roads, should probably keep the limit at 3,000 rpm. When using racing tires or on warmer days, a higher limit could be used.
