About 30,000 fake car parts were confiscated in Dubai since the beginning of the year until the end of May, an official at the Department of Economic Development (DED) told Gulf News. The DED raided auto spare parts stores and warehouses in Dubai where it confiscated mainly consumer products such as air filters and spark plugs, said Mohammad Lootah, Deputy CEO of the Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection Division in DED. Retailers can be fined between Dh15,000 to Dh30,000 depending on their history of consumer law violations and the number of counterfeit products, he said. “The number of fake car parts has increased during the first five months of the year compared to the same period last year,” he added but could, not provide specifics.“This is due to more efforts that DED is placing in combating duplicate spare parts,” he claimed. The number of violations in the first five months of the year decreased by more than 15 per cent compared to the same period last year, he noted. “When you confiscate the fake products, the retailers actually lose more than when you fine them. It’s more of a loss for them,” Lootah said. Despite these raids, the sale of fake car parts continues to be a problem in Dubai and can endanger people’s lives. from Gulf news.
