Jeddah is experiencing cold weather which is suitable for the breeding of mosquitos, and a number of areas these days are suffering from puddles of sewage. Wednesday's rain added to the problem.
Residents and citizens complained that sitting dirty water on the roads in different districts of Jeddah is a common phenomenon, and if there is rain the matter becomes worse as these puddles are breeding grounds for mosquitos, which are responsible for various diseases.
Abu Nabhan said mosquitos have increased as one morning he saw several mosquito bites on his son’s arm and face. “We use insecticide with no effect; the water puddles on the roads and in front of houses makes it worse and very difficult, but municipal authorities are not taking care (of the problem),” he said.
The Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industries’ committee for the central vegetable and fruit market called for an increase in environmental protection and requirements for the vegetable and fruit market located in Safa district.
The committee stressed the need for a hygienic spray in a sustained way to eliminate mosquitoes and prevent the spread of diseases among workers in the market that serves Jeddah and its neighboring provinces.
Suhaim bin Saeed Al-Ghamdi, chairman of the vegetable and fruit traders association, revealed that they had agreed at their last meeting to urge the Jeddah municipality to intensify their cleaning campaign of the Central Market and its neighboring areas.
He also said that the committee is seeking to address the obstacles that are faced in the process of Saudization of employment in the market; challenges related to rising prices; street vendors; and health and environmental problems faced by workers in the sector.
He also said that they are working to reduce the irregularities and problems that occur, as well as environmental and health problems that workers face, and problems that are faced by the municipalities and the secretariat of Jeddah. He pointed out that the commission is to have a meeting with government agencies, led by the province and the Labor Office of Jeddah about the market, which needs a lot of development to attract investors, and to solve the problems faced by investors and traders which have negative effects and cause prices to increase.
