The fourth Nuclear Energy Conference has stressed the important role of nuclear regulatory commissions as well as the significance of their independence as monitoring bodies. The conference, which concluded its deliberations here earlier on Thursday, underlined the new circumstances posed by the Fukushima incident and the role of nuclear regulatory entities in maintaining nuclear safety and security, stressing the need to adhere to safety standards developed after Fukushima incident. The gathering also gave an in-depth look at how the accident at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi reactor in March has affected atomic energy programs worldwide. The meeting, which was organized by the Jordan Nuclear Regulatory Commission (JNRC) in cooperation with Balqa Applied University discussed 40 papers on nuclear energy with a special focus on safety and security issues. Around 45 international experts representing 19 countries took part in the three-day conference, which served as a platform for Jordan to learn from other countries’ experience in producing nuclear power. Companies, students and local community members interested in the subject matter also participated the event.
