Think travel is expensive? Think again
Abu Dhabi - Emirates Voice

If you think travelling usually costs an arm and a leg, you haven't been looking far and wide. Travel website Price of Travel just recently listed down 132 countries based from the cheapest to the most expensive destinations.

The list is tailored for backpackers who almost always opt for travelling on a budget. Thus, if you're strapped for cash but need a short break, you can use this information to plan out your next trip. Now on its seventh month this year, the Backpacker Index follows a simple formula. The average price is determined by what is called a 'Daily Total'. The Daily Total includes a good and cheap hostel stay, 3 meals, two public transport rides, one paid attraction and an 'entertainment fund' on the side.

Taking the top spot is Pokhara, Nepal where you can only spend about $18.15 (Dh66) per day. It's followed by Hanoi and Saigon in the second and third spot. India and the Philippines also figure in the top 10 list of cheapest destinations with travellers only spending $20.53 (Dh75) in Goa and $21.25 (Dh78) in Manila. You can find the top 10 below.

    1. $18.15 - Pokhara, Nepal

    2. $18.18 - Hanoi, Viet Nam

    3. $18.29- Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), Viet Nam

    4. $19.48 - Chiang Mai, Thailand

    5. $20.26 - Vientiane, Lao People's Democratic Republic

    6. $20.53 - Goa, India

    7. $20.90 - Quito, Ecuador

    8. $21.25 - Manila, Philippines

    9. $21.80 - Yangon, Myanmar

    10. $22.20 - Colombo, Sri Lanka

The cheapest European country you could visit is Bucharest, Romania at $24.92 (Dh91).

On the other end of the spectrum, Zurich, Switzerland is the most expensive city to visit at $131.9 per day (Dh484). And if you're planning a UAE trip, Dubai is cheaper than Abu Dhabi with Dubai at $76.99 and Abu Dhabi at $80.32 per day.
